Cartilage Injury

Since many people with cartilage damage do not seek medical help, it is difficult to estimate how common it is. However, cartilage damage is thought to be quite common, and the majority of cases involve the knee joint.

Healthy cartilage in our joints makes it easier to move, as it allows the bones to glide over each other with very little friction. Unfortunately, cartilage structures and function are relatively easy to injure or damage. Cartilage damage can be the result of forceful impact on the joints, bad falls, sports-related accidents, previous knee injuries, or wear and tear over time. Immobilization for long periods of time can also result in cartilage damage.

Damaged cartilage will lead to inflammation and pain in your joints. In severe cases, damage to cartilage may also lead to fractures in the bone.

Symptoms of Cartilage Injury

  • Recurrent pain and swelling in joints
  • Stiffness
  • Locking of the knee (due to loose bodies within the joint)
  • Knee movements may be associated with audible clicks

If you have knee cartilage damage, schedule a consultation with Dr. Millstein, a Beverly Hills orthopedic surgeon.
